AOASM News - March 2007

President’s Welcome

Greetings Colleagues!

Welcome to the first AOASM E-Newsletter! We are very excited to offer this to members and friends of AOASM. This electronic newsletter is part of a plan to enhance communication so our members will be more connected than ever before.

The AOASM E-Newsletter will be issued monthly. It will be an opportunity for all members to stay abreast of developments and activities. We endeavor to have the newsletter be a resource for members. Future issues will include member profiles, committee information and guest commentary on current sports medicine topics. Most of all, it is YOUR newsletter and we are asking for your thoughts about what you want it to be.

The Research and Publications Committee will receive and write copy which will be submitted to the Website Committee for placement in newsletter format and sent to members. Chris Mehallo, D.O., and the Research and Publications Committee and Shawn Kerger, D.O., John Dougherty, D.O., and the Website Committee should be congratulated. John Hofmann of The Rees Group, Inc. has been central to this process and we thank him, also.

We realize the name, “AOASM E-Newsletter” may be rather bland. So, with your assistance, a more eye-catching, interesting and “fun” name can be implemented. We announce a contest for “NAMING THE NEWSLETTER!” We are now accepting entries which can be issued to Chris Mehallo, D.O., Publications Committee Chair. The Publications Committee will review all submissions and select a winner which will be announced at the AOASM Annual Meeting in St. Pete Beach. A prize will be issued to the winner! Please submit suggestions to cmehallo@comcast.net.

The AOASM is a vibrant and growing organization dedicated to sports medicine education and advocacy. The e-newsletter is one of many initiatives currently being undertaken to enhance services to our members. These are exciting times in the history of the AOASM and we look forward to a bigger and brighter future. Congratulations to all who have worked to develop this electronic newsletter. We look forward to seeing you at the AOASM Annual Conference in St. Pete Beach!

Best Wishes,

Lori A. Boyajian-O’Neill, D.O., FAOASM, FACOFP

CAQ Examination at AOASM Conference

The AOBFP Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine Examination and Recertification Examination will be offered for the first time at the AOASM Annual Conference in St. Pete Beach. We are very pleased to host this examination. Rick Parker, D.O., FAOASM, and other members of the Conjoint Examination Committee have been instrumental in bringing these examinations to the AOASM Annual Clinical Conference, which is much more convenient for our members. In the future, we would like all CAQ and Recertifications given at the AOASM Annual Meeting.

Strategic Planning

We are delighted to announce that the AOASM is set to undergo a formal strategic planning process. There has been much progress over the past several years and so a formal plan to move us forward is essential. The Board of Directors will convene at the AOASM Annual Clinical Conference to participate in the strategic planning process. This meeting will be facilitated by Jennifer W. Jones, AOA Director Division of Affiliate Affairs. The strategic plan will guide us through the next 5 years.

Website Renovation

We are very excited to announce the development of a newly designed website which is scheduled to be ‘up’ very soon. It will provide more information and expanded sections. Shawn Kerger, D.O., John Dougherty, D.O., and the Website Committee are to be congratulated on their work with this newsletter and the website. It will provide an on-line community for AOASM members and be a resource for information and education.

Resident and Student Relations

As sports medicine has increased in popularity, more residents and students have become interested in joining the AOASM. This was evident at last year's meeting in Scottsdale. We are expanding our services to them through educational programs and opportunities to participate at AOASM Annual Conference. David D. Dyck, Jr., D.O., and the Student Relations Committee have been key to this effort. We are in the process of developing an ad hoc Resident Relations Committee that will interact with the Conjoint Committee residencies which are: family medicine; NMM/OMM; emergency medicine; occupational medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation; internal medicine; pediatrics and preventive medicine.
