Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine - Seton Hill

On August 7, 2010, four members from the Sports Medicine club went to an Excela Health Sports Medicine Clinic held at a local community college for the afternoon.  The featured guest was Rocky Bleier, former Pittsburgh Steeler halfback when The Steel Curtain was in full effect during the late 1970s.  He was a part of the team during the original Super Bowl Era of the Steelers, super bowls IX, X, XIII, and XIV.  Rocky is now a motivational speaker across the United States.  He recalls his tales of war in Vietnam, including how he was wounded and received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star, and his struggle to get back onto the field once he returned.  In addition to Rocky Bleier, other speakers included James Masteron D.O., a concussion specialist at Excela Health, a few MDs from local hospitals, and various Seton Hill University athletic trainers.  Presentations were on concussions, sports injury and prevention, strength training, and nutrition.  By the end of the afternoon, I had learned how to assess for a concussion, how to exercise properly in order to lose weight, what to tell your patients when dieting and how much water to drink a day, and what to do in the case of injuries and the time it takes for that athlete to get back on the field.
