Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine

This year was the opening year for the Greenbrier PGA Golf Classic at the historic Greenbrier Resort in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. The tournament was held on the beautiful Old White Course where notables Sergio Garcia and Jim Furyk were challenged by Stuart Appleby (who ended up shooting a PGA record of 51 (par 72) on a Sunday) to win the record breaking tournament. Even Arnold Palmer was present to watch the golf action. With these well-known golf professionals present, it was with great pleasure that Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Sports Medicine Club was awarded the ability to provide CPR/First Aid as well as sports medicine coverage under the direct supervision of VCOM’s sports medicine physicians. Student club members were able to work practice their clinical skills as they took histories, developed differential diagnoses, and implemented treatment for spectators, caddies, and PGA golfers. Students had the opportunity to see how sports medicine works at the professional level as they helped to coordinate care alongside flight nurses, paramedics, and EMTs. It is the club’s hope that we can continue to nurture a great relationship with the golf classic’s staff and provide CPR/first aid for the event next year.
